I miss Detroit. Not just the idea of 'another' city, or the excitement of seeing in the flesh what I have only read and researched about. No motion-blur photographed-nostalgia-based intent if not intense memories of things that have and can still happen if only ______ wasn't there - in short, not just the abandonments.

I miss being grounded in a practical reality so like, and at the same time unlike my own; I recognize your form, and yet you have no function, City. I never get that in this place.

The deep depression of a world so certain of it's own success coming to ruin; fiscal nightmares, fleeing the monuments, skyscrapers world-high only to hold up banners for what seems, these days, to be another inevitable collapse. Chrysler may discontinue the Viper - can you imagine such an icon vanished? Packer did. The Cadillac hotel is a wreck, after all.

The 'skyscraper graveyard' is no myth, trees out of windows will tell you as much - bullet-proof Subway restaurant and razor-wire breakfast are no laughing matter - the 'people movers' are automated and Greek Town is the only place you'll find rest - among the few living, anyhow, and only because of a casino-

Yet it is stunningly beautiful - a testament to the fallibility of the American dream, unfulfilled; here I find, in a sad way, why these places are so beautiful - because they are so fragile.

The older the building, the more it scares us; it's design cast by eyes who would die before you moved into its offices. We look away from these apparent monstrosities, and to a certain benefit, neglect the edifices out of fear - moving to taller, more plastic, more mutable, will not outlive you - your city will change within your lifetime. The anti-aging creams of the architectural world.

We need to shed this odd cultural amnesia we tend to embrace every time we make ourselves faster, and better connected. It is true that those who go forth looking backward only run into walls, but it is more certain that those who look only forward with anticipation are missing their very lives-
